What Is the DIDD?
The Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities is a Tennessee State agency that provides a “person-centered and cost-effective state support system for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.” The DIDD offers various community service programs, from work placement to family support. - Case Management
Individuals with a self-Determination waiver are eligible for case management services. Case management services include ongoing assessment and service planning, as well as providing general education about the waiver program and helping with reporting and filing appeals.
- Employment First
Employment First attempts to help those with intellectual and developmental disabilities find meaningful and gainful employment. This means helping those with disabilities find the technology, resources, and accommodations necessary to help individuals find a long-term place in the workforce.
- Enabling Technology
Enabling Technology is a program started in 2017, intended to help those with intellectual and developmental disabilities take advantage of assistive technologies. This program helps individuals learn to use technology like sensors, mobile applications, remote support systems, and other smart devices.
- HCBS Settings Rule
The HCBS Setting Rules, finalized on March 17, 2014, set a standard for Person-Centered Care Planning. This effort increases the input individuals have on their own services, care plans, and environment. It also ensures that everyone is given an opportunity to fully integrate into society in a way that makes them comfortable.
- Family Support Program
Since 1992, the DIDD has provided family support services for those caring for an individual with intellectual and developmental disabilities. These services range from helping you understand the Medicaid HCBS Waiver to counseling.
- Pre-Administrative Screening Resident Review
The DIDD has a unique process, the federally mandated Level II PASRR evaluation, which determines whether an individual is eligible for a Medicaid-certified care agency. This exam also determines the level of care an individual needs while with an agency.
- ABLE TN
Achieving a Better Living Experience (ABLE TN) is a program that helps individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities save money for certain expenses. This program helps individuals set aside money for things like education, housing, transportation, assistive technology, and personal support services.
- Seating and Positioning
DIDD offers seating and positioning clinics that help individuals with complex seating and positioning needs. This can include consultations with an occupational therapist and the custom design and fabrication of special seating devices.
- Community Resources
The DIDD Pathfinder program helps connect individuals with disabilities and their families with the resources they need. From legal matters to financial assistance, the Pathfinder website provides various toolkits to help you find the best-suited services for your situation.
TN START is a statewide organization that aids individuals with complex intellectual and developmental disabilities and behavioral or mental health needs. This collaboration between DIDD and the Systematic, Therapeutic Assessment, Resources, and Treatment, offers services directed to increase an individual’s independence treatment, and community living.
- MAPS
Medical Alternative Pathways to Independence (MAPS) is a DIDD program that helps individuals create their own pathway to developing the skills they need to live and work independently. They learn how to navigate their neighborhoods, hobbies, and other aspects of their community with the assistance of technology and community-based resources.
